Call for Comments - Spring 2021 Residency Evaluations

The Council provides opportunity for individuals or organizations to submit written comments concerning an institution’s qualifications for provisional or continued approval. The Council publishes notices in APMA News and on its website regarding its plans to conduct either a focused evaluation or a comprehensive evaluation of an institution that seeks provisional approval or continuation of approval. The notice indicates the deadline for receipt of third-party comments.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

CPME continues to closely monitor the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic and guidance/updates issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, and other sources. CPME believes the most responsible course of action to protect the health and well-being of committee members, evaluators, and CPME staff is to cancel in-person meetings and conduct them virtually. All on-site visits scheduled for the spring 2021 cycle will be conducted virtually.

Residency Ad Hoc Advisory Committee

The Residency Ad Hoc Advisory Committee met between October 2018–September 2020 to revise CPME 320 and 330. The Council approved the resulting Draft I Revisions in October. Town Hall Meetings will be held virtually December 15 at 3:00 p.m. ET and January 26, 2021 at 7:00 pm ET. The call for comment period, on the Draft I Revisions, has been extended to February 15, 2021 and a third town hall meeting has been scheduled in order to provide an additional opportunity for interested parties to hear a more detailed explanation of the draft documents.

CPME 320 and CPME 330 Draft I Revisions
Prior to adoption, all Council policies, procedures, standards, and requirements are disseminated widely in order to obtain information regarding how the Council’s community of interest may be affected. Draft I revisions of CPME publications 320 and 330 will be open for comment until February 15, 2021. Following a review of the comments from the community of interest, the proposed revisions to CPME publications 320 and 330 will be considered for final adoption by the Council during its April 2021 meeting.

CPME Statement on the CSPE for Students Entering Residency in 2021
At its October 2020 meeting, the Council reviewed the request made by the NBPME to “modify the requirement of passing the CSPE examination, which is part of the Part II examination, from prior to beginning a residency program to prior to completing a residency program.” The Council approved a recommendation made by the RRC that residency programs will not be cited with an area of noncompliance if they accept students entering residency training in 2021 who have not passed the NBPME Part II CSPE. The Council did not go so far as to state when students or residents should take the examination, as that is outside the purview of the Council. The full statement is available here.

At its October 2020 meeting, CPME adopted changes to CPME 900, Bylaws, CPME 925, Complaint Procedures, CPME 935a, Guidelines for the Conduct of Appeals by Colleges of Podiatric Medicine, CPME 935b, and Guidelines for the Conduct of Appeals by Residencies, Fellowships, Providers of Continuing Education, and Specialty Boards.
